Deal Reached on Continuing Resolution Extension

Senate leaders reacted positively to a House proposal to extend funding of the federal government an additional 2 weeks past the initial March 4th deadline to allow the Senate more time to debate their version of the CR and, hopefully, come to an agreement with the House.  This temporary funding deal will cut $4B from current spending levels over the next several weeks, but does not include any of the controversial health care de-funding amendments favored by Republicans in the House.

The House passed its version of the continuing resolution, funding the government through September, on February 19th and the Senate is scheduled to begin debate on its version this week.  The House and Senate versions will need to be combined and passed by both houses before going to the President.
