Department of Health and Human Services Assistant Secretary for Policy and Evaluation Sherry Glied testified in front of the House Energy and Commerce Committee yesterday and made headlines by stating that HHS will not include new rules and regulations created by the Affordable Care Act as part of the President’s Executive Order on reviewing needless/wasteful regulations, saying they are so new that to review them now does not make sense. Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Cliff Stearns (R-Fl.) also attempted to get Ms. Glied to provide a date by which HHS would release their “Essential Health Benefits Package” later this year. Ms Glied could not provide a timeline or a specific date, saying only that they are working on it and waiting for recommendations from the Institute of Medicine, due in September, before moving forward. The video below shows part Ms Glied’s testimony on the Essential Benefits Package timeline, she went on to say that HHS expects the package to be ready for release in October or November of this year.
Inclusion in the Essential Benefits Package is, for lack of a better term, essential to the future of the orthotics and prosthetics profession, as the EBP will form the likely minimum insurance plan that can be sold on the state-based health exchanges starting in 2014.
