Update: CMS Says Letter Outlining O&P Audit Limits Incorrect

Last week, OPGA heard from several members detailing a letter they had received which rescinded documentation requests on certain orthotic and prosthetic claims prior to 2011. Details were scant, but we wanted to get the information in the hands of OPGA members.

Unfortuntately, CMS issued a clarification today retracting the rescinded audit documentation requests, claiming that the letters sent to O&P practitioners facing audits were issued by mistake. CMS did officially state that they instructed their RAC auditors to limit the lookback period on power mobility devices to 12 months to coincide with their seven state prior authorization demonstration project on PMD’s.

OPGA apologizes for the confusion and will continue working on behalf of our members until we see the necessary changes made to CMS’ troubled audit program.
